Sitting in the VIP balcony of the Kennedy Center opera house were comedy legends Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, and Dave Chappelle, as they watched Kevin Hart receive the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for his lifetime achievements in comedy on Sunday night.

Hart, who started his comedy journey in the clubs and open mics of Philadelphia, expressed his love for comedy and mentioned that he never pursued it for the sake of awards. Known for his unique style that blends his small stature with a lively facial expressions and fast-paced delivery, Hart has become one of the most famous comedy performers in the country, selling out arenas with his stand-up shows.

The ceremony at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was filled with laughter and praise for Hart, with celebrities and fellow comedians acknowledging his strong work ethic, positive attitude, and unwavering commitment to his craft. Kevin Hart joined the list of esteemed recipients of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in a joyous celebration of his comedic talents.

“He’s truly an inspiration,” stated comedian Nikki Glazer on the red carpet. “He’s one of the most naturally gifted individuals I’ve ever met. And you know what? He’s not afraid to show some self-love, which is a rare quality among successful comedians.”

Comedic actor J.B. Smoove, known for his role as Leon on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” reminisced about Kevin Hart as a young and overly enthusiastic talent.

“To be honest, he was a bit of a pest when he first started out,” Smoove shared. “But he was always eager to learn, always soaking up knowledge from others without any fear.”

The event began with an energetic performance by Robin Thicke and Nelly. The night turned into more of a playful roast than a typical award ceremony, with various comedians poking fun at Hart’s height and teasing the ups and downs of his extensive body of work. Kevin Hart has an impressive resume, with 93 movies and TV shows under his belt and nine more in the works.

“Kevin really values one thing… the size of the check,” joked his frequent co-star Regina Hall. “Let’s be honest, not all of his projects are masterpieces, but the man sure knows how to secure that bag!”

Rock praised Hart’s new look and happiness after going through a high-profile divorce, joking that he now has that “second wife glow.” On the other hand, Chappelle took a more serious tone, describing Hart as a visionary and dreamer. He highlighted Hart’s achievement of filling a massive football stadium with 53,000 fans as a source of inspiration for both Rock and himself.

Chappelle also mentioned Hart’s successful transition from stand-up comedy to the big screen, with notable roles in films like “Paper Soldiers” and scene-stealing appearances in hits like “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.” Hart’s movies have amassed a staggering $4.23 billion in global box office sales.

The Mark Twain Prize, now in its 25th year, celebrates individuals who have had a significant impact on humor and culture. Recipients of the award are presented with a bronze bust of Twain, the legendary American author and satirist known by his real name of Samuel Clemens.

The Mark Twain Award winners are celebrated with a special evening filled with heartfelt speeches and video accolades, often presented by past honorees. Some of the famous comedians who have received this prestigious lifetime achievement award include Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Whoopi Goldberg, Bob Newhart, Carol Burnett, and Dave Chapelle. However, Bill Cosby, who was awarded the prize in 2009, had his recognition revoked in 2019 following accusations of sexual misconduct. This year’s ceremony will be televised on Netflix starting from May 11.
